I have a hard time believing the Mavs would settle in on one guy this early in the process.
Especially one who didn't open things up enough offensively at his last gig to the satisfaction of his bosses (which included pal Larry Bird).
But those things are always situational and a coach does what he feels gives his team the best chance to win. Rick Carlisle is a very good coach - his record speaks for itself.
I just anticipated a little different style. But maybe he is so prepared and so together in his interviews that the Mavs feel like they have to look no further.
This will likely be more than a bit jumbled and incomplete.
I am pretty surprised that Carlisle will likely be the guy, but I also think he is a tremendous coach and would be in favor of the move.
Certainly, everyone will talk about whether or not a Carlisle offense will maximize Jason Kidd's abilities and point to that as a major problem from the stretch run of this past season. And maybe other coaches would be more run and gun, but Carlisle will be doing much more than an isolation offense to take advantage of the Mavs weapons.
For me the most important issue offensively is that Carlisle has proven he is one of the best Xs and Os guys in the business. One of my big frustrations this past season was how poor the Mavs looked on key possessions coming out of timeouts. Even with a vastly depleted roster in Indiana during the fight season, Carslisle teams really responded and often got easy buckets coming out of the huddle.
There are about a million things to discuss with Carlisle, most of which are impossible to even have a solid discussion about until we see what other personnel moves the Mavs will make in the off-season are.
But bottom line, if it becomes official, the Mavs are bringing in a guy whose main criticism has just been he is too much of a perfectionist and over the course of several years that can wear on players. But if it takes several years, then the window of opportunity has already closed on this unit, so I love having a perfectionist like Carlisle on my side.
