Today we kick off Texas-OU week with Quick's fourth-annual Red River Rap Battle. As always, we feature two of Dallas' finest MCs. This year it's Playdough representing Texas, and Dawg Wonder rapping for Oklahoma.
Go here to stream or download the song, vote on a winner, see photos of the guys by Jason Janik, and watch the video shot by Alex Kanakis at the Oak Cliff Boxing Club. Good stuff. You can also see battles from '06 and '07 (Steve Austin vs. Knesecary, Mr. Pookie vs. Mr. Lucci).
Underground hip hop rapper Del performs tonight in Dallas at The Granada Theater. Bukue One, Tee Double and HeadKrack are also on the bill. Most folks would know Deltron from rolling with the Hieroglypics crew and doing cuts with the Gorillaz.
Classic crate-diggers will always love sifting through cluttered piles of records in the back of a nameless bookstore looking for that rare 12-inch gem. For those who have converted to the new methods - UK based DJ History launches their 'rare online music store' today.
The site, which sells downloads of rare vinyl tracks, claims to "do the digging, so you don't have to".
"We'll never be as big as iTunes, but we'll always be more interesting. The store is aimed at DJs, music geeks and anyone who wants great, unknown music,"
Dallas legend Erkyah Badu is set to win a MTV VMA award for Best Direction for her "Honey" video. Great song and classic video!
Kanye West and Jay-Z are releasing their new singles via download in the next few days. Kanye's "Swagger Like Us" feat. Jay-Z, T.I. and Lil Wayne has already leaked to the webs.
Video: Radiohead's entire live performance set from The Santa Barbara Webcast!
Video: Hip Hop artist Consequence Interview & Freestyle. Cons gives the scoop on his growing online celebrity status.
Free download: OJayZis: Jay-Z vs. Oasis. The mixtape takes the vocals from some of Jay's greatest hits and matches them with the beats and choruses from various Oasis records. Download here.
Q-Tip (from A Tribe Called Quest) leaks an unofficial official bootleg video from his still unreleased The Renaissance CD. Album street date is Oct.14th.
Can't really hide my disappointment over the bill change that leaves SFP and Little Brother out of the equation for tomorrow night's Big Daddy Kane show. I Doubt I take time away from my family to go to this now.
But The Granada is a great venue and BDK is one of the greatest of all-time, as evidenced by the timeless joint above showing Marley Marl at the peak of his genius.
As for the new S1 CD, it is really good. There are 4 or 5 cuts on there that are as good as anything he's ever done and I'd love for "Callin' Me," the collab with LB's Phonte, to get some major attention.
The Official Kixpo Mixtape got posted this morning over at Picnic's blog. Mostly produced by Picnic (he hosts it too) and mixed by Niro - it's 24 cuts deep with features from Krack, Dawg Wonder, Knes, Paul Wall - it go on and on...And it's the nice price of free.
Thanks to Mike Fisher for putting us up on this TMZ video post of a Shaq performance last night in which he had the crowd chanting, "Kobe, tell me how my &$$ tastes."
The Green Eyed Bandit and PMD drop some facts about an upcoming EPMD full cd release. Yeaah buddy! This is a record that will definitely generate some buzz with the heads. E.Sermon's production skills are top shelf and often under rated like James Posey. We'll get the peeps at Fontana to keep us updated on the legendary crew's new joint. Maybe even jack them up for some giveaways for a Boogie Spot contest. Stay tuned!
The Roots throwdown at HOB tonight. I've seen 'em many times in the last decade plus and they're always on point. And it seems that you can always count on a ?uestlove DJ gig following the show.
Tonight he'll be spinning at GhostBar as they celebrate Paul Levatino's birthday. Levatino is one of the heavies in Badu's world.
?uestlove is a great DJ because he's way into the music - all kinds.
He's not just playing records or trying to get people to dance. He's using his knowledge, feel and musicality to spark a vibe and I always enjoy that just as much as the live show.
Jeff Chang, author of the immortal hip-hop tome Can't Stop Won't Stop, has been blogging about the election year for vibe.com. (Nice gig). Check out his latest post, on getting out the youth vote, here.
Tonight's Game 6 was pretty epic. The C's were down 70-60 before a 10-0 run gave them the mo they needed to avoid their third consecutive Game 7.
All nostalgia aside, this will be a great Championship series because the Celtics have the homecourt advantage. Everyone's predicting the Lakers because they're the better team.
Biggest problem - The Celtics just don't have the bodies to throw at Kobe. The Lakers will have problems with Paul Pierce too, but Kobe is ballin' out of control and he'll kill Ray Ray. The Spurs had Bowen and Manu and Kobe still did whatever he wanted too, whenever he wanted too.
Look out how Doc Rivers handled minutes in the 4th tonight with Ray Ray and Posey. Posey got the majority of the burn because of his D leaving Pierce as the only real go-to guy.
With all due respect to KG, one of my favorites ever - he's a facilitator. He passed up some big shots down the stretch tonight - it's who he is.
That's why he needs Pierce and Ray Ray. The rub is that the C's will have to find minutes for Posey late in the game to at least attempt to bother Kobe. Which means one of the most clutch shooters in basketball will be on the pine.
I found out a little ways back that PPT weren't going to continue on as a trio. I sat on the info and stayed out of their business. Being in a group has it's ups and downs.
Not sure that I can ever recall there being THREE versions of a video for one song, but expect the unexpected with Kanye.
This is the third version of the "Flashing Lights" series to leak to the intrawebs.
No confirmation that Gov. Paterson's favorite joint is "Treat Her Like A Prostitue," but I have no problem with wildly speculating with nothing to back it up.
We went on and on about his show tonight at the Liquid Lounge in today's Sure Shot. We don't get out much anymore, but we're going to do everything we can to check it out.
Here's the latest track by Common featuring Pharrell. It's more clubbishy than his recent tracks - hopefully he and Kanye keep the Chi City fire alive in the studio.
You may have heard that Bill "hip-hop is evil" Cosby is planning to release a squeaky-clean rap album that won't poison America's youth. What a guy. Here are two decidedly different takes on the matter: the above spoof video, which jacks a killer Dre beat; and Ta-Nehisi Coates' excellent (and really long) piece in the new issue of the Atlantic, which explores Cosby's conservative ideology and vintage Black Nationalist cred.
Keeping the Wu-Tang theme flowing, here's a look at an upcoming documentary based on the now deceased O.D.B aka Ason Unique. It's being edited by his brother so there should be some rare behind the scenes stories about the crazy Bastard. *Language Warning*
