Latin heaters for a hot summer

Fania cover

In today's Sure Shot, I carried on about a couple of new Fania comps that have been getting serious burn around the crib lately.

You should move that Gilles Peterson comp to the top of your "must get now" list. It's pretty much all I've been listening to and I'm not even coming close to burn out stage yet.

Two discs worth of undeniable gems hand picked by a dude who always delivers. I'm at the point where I'll snatch up anything his name is on anyway, but this is so very winnin'.

What you really know 'bout the Dirty South

Remember the first time you put on Goodie Mob's Soul Food and you heard the sweet sounds of that overdriven electric piano swimming around on "Free?" You started zoning out and then Cee-Lo starts in "Lord it's so hard..."

You thought to yourself, "Damn, this here is something special."

Ahhhhh yeah...I'm with this!

Today's Sure Shot is happening right hurr.

Can't really hide my disappointment over the bill change that leaves SFP and Little Brother out of the equation for tomorrow night's Big Daddy Kane show. I Doubt I take time away from my family to go to this now.

But The Granada is a great venue and BDK is one of the greatest of all-time, as evidenced by the timeless joint above showing Marley Marl at the peak of his genius.

As for the new S1 CD, it is really good. There are 4 or 5 cuts on there that are as good as anything he's ever done and I'd love for "Callin' Me," the collab with LB's Phonte, to get some major attention.

If you wanna hear more, then check out this Gemini Disco Soul Party podqast with S1. Good talk, good tunes.

If I was still in the mix tomorrow night, I'd probably hit up BDK then swing through Zubar to check out S1's listening party.

Support your local heat...

I love you, oh sweet, precious YouTube

I was zoning out while eating tonight, when suddenly the Marvin Gaye tune "I Want You" started bouncing around my dome. That's actually a pretty common occurrence. It's easily one of my favorite songs - never get sick of it.

I remembered that somewhere along the line I had seen a documentary that had a clip of him laying on a couch and singing it while rehearsing with his band, trying to figure out the arrangement.

I remember being pretty blown away at how cool the rehearsal sounded and hearing the song stripped down without the lush strings and brass that were so integral to the version that ended up on the album of the same name.

"I bet I could find that on YouTube," I said to myself, while ignoring my family and picking a piece of roast beef out of my teeth.

It took me all of ten seconds to find it once I got on my computer. So frickin' cool.

I love you, oh Lord of technology and interstrong. You also make porn completely feasible, if that's indeed the way someone wishes to spend their time.

Enjoy!

Rotación pesada!

In last Friday's Sure Shot, we carried on about the great new Grupo Fantasma CD Sonidos Gold.

The press keeps rolling in. We think highly of Star Telegram critic Cary Darling and he thinks highly of Grupo's new joint (pick #5 at the bottom). And check out this NPR podcast - that's a nice look for those boys.

They are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. As soon as I know when they're rolling through, we'll let you know too.

And if you're into the trippy, textured, psychedelic downtempo groove - check out Grupo guitarist/producer AQ's side project Ocote Soul Sounds with Martin Perna of Antibalas fame.

S1's Music Box gets the Giant Step treatment

S1 - Courtesy Giant Step

I always look forward to the promos I get from the Giant Step folks. Been keen to their scene since the early 90s.

In fact my first ever trip to The Apple included a Giant Step party with Groove Collective and that whole AJ trip that was going on back then.

So now I'll stop burying the lead and tell you to click here to check out Giant Step's promotion of S1's newest project.

Looks/sounds most heavy...

Always time for the Roots

Pik's new video offering (posted over at the Nightlife blog) has him singing over Bobby Hutcherson's old tune "Montara."

It reminded me of how much I liked the cover version The Roots did for some sort of Blue Note release several years back.

So I posted it above.

Music: new Common single "Universal Mind Control"

Here's the latest track by Common featuring Pharrell. It's more clubbishy than his recent tracks - hopefully he and Kanye keep the Chi City fire alive in the studio.

Krack and Playdough call off battle to discuss Mav issues at Quick's Big Thing

Krack v. Playdough v. Janik

Last night's Big Thing was good times. The performances were cool, Gordo made some funny, and me and wifey actually got a night away from the midgets. And the Jive Turkeys had that place rowdy at the jump.

I hosted the freestyle exhibition/battle between Playdough and Krack and it seemed to go over pretty well. Both of those dudes have elitle-level skills and they adjusted to the left-of-center format of the battle and did their thing.

Krack's supporters were the loudest, but it's not like his victory was a landslide. Congrats to both.

Kool Bob schools 'em in Milan

Courtesy of Bounce

Bobbito Garcia is one of my favorite humans on the planet. He's literally at the forefront of so many of the things I hold near and dear in this world.

He's also been mad cool to me and Benny. He's jumped on the air with us and always shown love on the rare occassions we get to see him in person.

His blog over at Bounce is always full of good stuff (which is amusing considering as little as two years ago dude barely messed with any kind of cyber communication), but I thought you'd particularly enjoy this education he was bestowing upon the heads in Milan.

Good call, Nike

Never been all up on Saul Williams jock. Respected him but rarely bumped his stuff.

This joint, however (which is featured in those new Nike ads), absolutely makes me wanna go buckwild and start F*@#ING S%!T up.

I don't really know what the hell Sparq is and I doubt I'll take the time to find out, but those spots get me amped.

Quick unleashes giant sexy local music shindig, starring sex

big thing

I've had to sit on this for a minute, but the cat is now out of the bag for Quick's Big Thing. It's a big ole party/concert/awards presentation/orgy with a great performing lineup at a cool venue.

It's free and the Great Gordo is hosting. Get a load of the bands throwin' down.

Anytime the Spree do their thing it's a big to-do, but I'm just as excited to see big dumb country Danny's King Bucks perform.

Plus my peoples The Party got the decks, PPT are always ready, Krack and Playdough are going to put on a freestyle exhibition, and they let your boy be a panelist. So choice.

Go vote now and stuff.
