Lakers forward has a stalker

Luke Walton (LA Lakers forward) apparently has a female stalker that's on his trail. Maybe it's an old deadhead groupie looking for his pops. In all seriousness, the details of the story are very creepy.

"It was more an annoyance than anything else until recently when she did that gun thing (gesturing at him with her hand as if shooting at him). And then I was like, 'All right. Now she's crossed the line.' "

NBA Boogie madness is coming [Amerie approves this message]

The NBA season is nearly upon hoops fans with training camps already in full gear. The system will be in full effect with the latest BS hoops goods from around the webs - and we'll see if we can find Skin to get a pinch of his Mavs mentals.

* Jason Terry (Mavs): The Jet gives an interview with DIME Magazine and fellow Seattle born Jamal Crawford from the Chicago Bulls.

- nuggets include: a Jet Reebok video promo that debuts a new line of Talkin Krazy sneakers that you can write on.. and erase.. and re-write on again.

Dime: I hear you're going to be wearing the Reebok Talkin Krazy this season. What are you going to write on it?

JT: My nickname is JET, so I'm gonna write, "Clear The Runway."

Allan Houston unretires, trains for Knicks return

Oft-injured guard Allan Houston is trying to make a NY Knicks comeback this season after signing as a free agent last week. He bags ten straight 3ptrs in this video, but after only playing a few spot minutes in the past few NBA seasons I would consider any actual game productivity as a bonus. But then again it is the Knicks. (Hopefully Houston's comeback attempt will last longer than Shawn Kemp's disaster.)

An Open Letter from Allan Houston reads as follows:

"Dear family, friends, fans and prayer partners worldwide:

First and foremost, I want to say thank you all for your support throughout the years and most recently for your overwhelming prayers for my daughter Jade, who successfully made it through heart surgery on August 13, 2008.

As you are reading this letter today (Monday, September 29, 2008), I am beginning basketball training camp with the New York Knicks. For anyone who may have never seen an NBA Basketball Preparation Regimen, feel free to click on any of the Internet links below (viewable/accessible on: YouTube; Google/Video or 24Gospel to see a recent short video clip from me highlighting: (a) some basketball fundamentals; (b) keys to hitting the 3-Point Shot (plus one shot from half-court), and (c) an expression of my sincere appreciation for your goodwill:

Kidd talks Mavs, doesn't tivo Nets games

Mavs point guard Jason Kidd had an interview where he discusses his current contract status, the NJ Nets and the Beijing Olympics.
[Via True Hoop]

Some might say it's not so good, that a lot of the traditional powers -- Phoenix, Denver and your guys -- are ready for a slide.

"That's the beauty of the NBA. You're going to hear that, especially when you have a team that didn't play up to expectations, after a trade everyone thought would be a little better. Now we have a training camp and a new coach (Rick Carlisle), so we're together. Really, I'm excited about this year. We've got one of the best players in the world, we've got a very talented player in Josh Howard, who will be come out strong after a disappointing second half. Jason Terry, Brandon Bass. I like the team we have."

Olympics: TEAM USA bball prepares for Spain

Fresh from their confident 92-69 win over Greece in an important revenge game, the Americans have no time relax as they now face a tough Spain team on Saturday. While this is only Group play and a loss would not mean elimination for the US team, they are determined to remain focused in order to reach the medal round.

Team USA has played amazing defense through the first 3 games with the opposing team's point guard's being pressured into massive turnovers. The Greek team had 25 turnovers to match their 26 field goals. In addition to LeBron, local Dallas product Chris Bosh has been one of the outstanding US players with sound fundamental bball on both ends of the court.

Please match...No wait, don't!

Elevation (getty)

I'm a little conflicted on where I want Josh Smith to end up next year.

Hank has a good round-up of the tidbits here.

On the one hand, I love Joe Johnson and enjoyed the Hawks last year and I want that team to stay together. But I also realize the departure of Josh Childress' crazy ears hurts and there are so many bad vibes coming out of Atlanta.

And then there's the idea of the Grizz getting up and down the floor under Crazy Ivaroni, who once yelled at me on press row because the audio person at the AAC played a drop during one of then Sun Steph Marbury's brick free throws. That's not a bit - really happened.

But I'm still a believer in Mike Conley and I think OJ Mayo will score. Throw in a forward pairing of Rudy Gay and Smith, and that means you'd have a young team that'll make a ton of mistakes, but be a blast to watch along the way.

NBA releases schedule, ESPN counters with gay Nash picture

Nash (getty)

The NBA Schedule was released today.

The homie Stein filed this report and then sent Benny and I a complete non sequitur e-mail referencing a line from one of the old Ben and Skin Mavs Post-Game Show intros.

When I asked if it had anything to do with the schedule, he told me I should be ashamed.

I was.

The homie Mario points out that opening night gives us "the two most important surgically-repaired knees in the NBA next season, Portland vs Lakers on TNT"

I'll be so very locked in.

Another kick to ye Mavs crotch?

Kidd Getty

As I see it, there are 2 ways to look at this Chris Sheridan report on reduced playing time for Jason Kidd in tune-up play for the olympics.

Half-full guy will say we don't want Kidd burning up minutes on his 35 year-old legs anyway and that Coach K has plenty of guys who need minutes.

Half-empty guy will say it's a clear indication of the end of Kidd's effectiveness and if Russia can exploit him when he's ballin' with Kobe, LeBron and D Howard, what are NBA teams going to do to him when he's ballin' with JoHo and I dunno, Gerald Green?

I haven't seen a second of any of these games, so I'll be uninformed-shrug-my-shoulders guy who walks around with a bad feeling in his stomach.

This is how Ron chills from 93 til....

Ron Ron (AP)

Late last night we were speculating on how The Rockets would use Ron Ron with the other dudes they already had on their roster.

The Stat says his spies think he'll be a four. I really love that idea, especially since Yao can take up so much space.

Un-befrickin-lievable! Can you say biggest 3?

Artest (Getty)

ESPN says The Rockets are next year's champions.

When Artest is your third best player behind a dominant low-post scorer (Yao) and a borderline unguardable individual scorer (T-Mac), then I'd say you're front-runnin'.

The doubters will say they'll play a combined 38 games together next year due to injuries and various forms of crazy, but on paper this team is absurd.

Do you start Artest alongside Battier and T-Mac and play small at the four with Artest, making other fours either chase Battier to the corners on rotations or cover Ron-Ron away from the hoop with a live dribble? Delicious...

Or do you start Scola and have him and Artest beat the crap out of people - Battier off the bench as the perfect 6th man? Or trade Battier for a scoring/shooting wing? What great options to have, huh?

According to earlier reports, The Mavs offered Stack (expiring contract) and Bass for Artest. If this was true, that's like offering Bass for Artest since Artest's contract was already expiring.

Same deal here as Bobby Jackson is expiring, so the Rockets just traded two late first round picks (this year's Donte Greene, who I happen to really like) and their '09 pick (surely that'll be a late-rounder) for Artest.

All hindsight clichés aside, wouldn't it be cool to have had at least one of those Kidd first rounders back for situations like this?

I think there's a domino metaphor for this

I've kind of fallen back into not caring about the whole NBA ref scandal thing again. But I suppose that dude getting 15 months is big news so here's the obligatory link.

I'm far more interested in Okafor resigning with the Cats - especially since there were some Diop-related items attached to this saga.

All eyes on on the Josh Smith deal now, unless you consider daily reports that nothing is happening between Chicago and their restricted former lottery guys interesting.

Win an award, don't post for 3 days

Kwame (getty)

As detailed in this now classic post, D Magazine's Best of issue says Large Ben and I are the best columnists ever in any format or style.

Well it's about time.

So we celebrated the recognition by neglecting the blog for 72 hours. Only Montel Jordan could possibly describe the thought-process behind such game.

It's a move reminiscent of contract-year Kwame Brown. Which brings us to our "in other news" item:

Brown signed for what?

Doesn't make you feel so bad about Diop anymore, does it? At least 'Gana has pride.

Our Josh Smith fantasy crushed

A few days ago we speculated on how the Josh Childress European Experiment could make it easier to acquire Josh Smith in a S&T.

After talking to a guy who has amazing insight/access on such things, we're sad to report that it's highly unlikely that the Hawks will be operating under the cap - thus making Josh Smith a probable BYC signing.

Our premise was accurate, our source just doesn' think the Hawks would renounce the rights to Childress to make it happen. His cap hold leaves the on Hawks October 1st and returns July 1, 2009 if they don't renounce.

DallasBasketball's cap genius David Lord has other off-season ideas. He says go get Mo Evans.

Instant update - wild cap speculation

What does this report of Josh Childress going to Greece mean?

It means that Josh Smith may have just become easier to trade. I think.

I don't have exact cap figures - I usually check somewhat reliable online sources like this. But you have to consider the variable that these are innacurate.

however...

The dreaded BYC status only applies to players when they are signed by team's that are over the cap.

Depending on how quickly Josh Childress' cap hold is removed from their cap number and how accurate these numbers are, The Hawks will be under the cap and Smith won't receive BYC status in a S&T.

I'm bad at math and reading documents - so please allow me some margin for error. But that's how I read it.

That'd open up some pretty interesting scenarios if I'm reading this right.

The Dub's CJ Miles levitates

CJ Miles (Getty)

CJ Miles (Skyline) signed a deal with the OKC Bad Weathers last Friday (peep the connections in this link) and the Jazz have until Friday to match. Everyone's assuming they won't.

Here's a nice piece analyzing the loss for Utah.

While I liked the idea of Utah one day having a ridiculous, all-DFW backcourt, at least we'll get to see the Durant/Miles combo that dreamers wish could have been at UT.

Kevin Love out to prove the doubters wrong

After having a rough first half in his debut versus the Mavs, Twolves rookie Kevin Love has put in some impressive work during summer league play. NBA Summer League: Mavs vs Kings 93-71 plus trade rumors

The Mavs defeated the Sacramento Kings 93-71 in last night's summer league game. Gerald Green had his best outing so far with 18 pts and 7 rebs. Check out a game interview with Green here, where he discusses his development as an NBA player.

In other Mavs/Kings love-making news, there was possibly a trade offered of Brandon Bass and Stackhouse for Ron Artest. The buzz is that the Kings will entertain deals that include Josh Howard. Would you make a play for Ron Arteezy?

Put the crack down and give Dallas its props

Chris Bosh (getty)

ESPN did some bit where they determined the prep basketball hotbeds since 1998 and somehow the Dub ain't on the list of the top 8.

Wait until you see the lists for Philly and NY. What a joke.

Maybe they're not considering the suburbs as part of the city - though they don't say that. And with all due repsect to our brothers to the south - a definite hoops hotbed in Houston - they ain't touchin' what the metroplex has churned out in the last decade.

Want names from the last ten years? C Bosh, Deron Williams, Anthony Randolph, Kenyon Martin, CJ Miles, Quinton Ross, Darrell Arthur, Sean Williams, hell - throw a Sasser brother in there for all I care. That's with no research - I'm probably forgetting a badass.

(12:41 AM edit - I forgot two badasses, I was so mad lotto picks Acie Law and LaMarcus Aldridge slipped my mind)

By comparison, NY is starting Smush Parker, Sebastian Telfair and Julius frickin' Hodge? I'm not joking. And the other two dudes (Ben Gordon and Chuck Villanueva) ain't on the Olympic team like Bosh and Williams.

What a load of crap! You suck ESPN. I'm surprised Bristol didn't make the Top 8.

Why do I let garbage like this get under my skin? Infuriating. Straight disrecpect.

VIDEO: Mavs vs T.Wolves summer league game highlights

Skinathon and the Ticket crew will dig deep into Mavs news and summer scoop today on the Ticket. Here's a look at last night's game vs Minnesota, which was also top 5 overall drafted Kevin Love's rookie debut. I liked Big Love during his run at UCLA, but it remains to be seen how he will rank versus NBA level defenders. He has a decent outside jumper but will his slow speed give him problems getting good looks at the next level?

The Dallas Mavericks ruined Kevin Love's NBA debut as they crushed the Minnesota Timberwolves 88-74 in the final game of the NBA Summer League at COX Pavilion on Monday night. JaJuan Smith led all scorers with 19 points off the bench for the Mavericks.

Germany defeated Cape Verde 104-68 to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2008 Olympics qualifying tournament. Dirk had a game-high 16 points, while Chris Kaman had 10pts and 10 boards in his debut for the German National team. Mavs/Clippers lid-heavy quick hits

Why do I punish myself? I had forgotten how brutal summer league can be.

Here's the box if you care.

James Singleton struck me as the only dude who may be able to give them anything this year. I didn't even realize he'd led them in scoring and rebounding until I saw the box, but that's not the reason why.

He looks like a useful rotation player at the back half of that rotation. A little like Junkyard Dog Jerome Williams, but somewhat of a spot shooter.

I'm not getting carried away here. Don't read anything into this as I'm not overhyping him. Just a useful guy for the roster - that's all. He also had 5 turnovers and 347 fouls - aiight?
